Summer this year has been unexpectedly hot and temperatures are still rising! Although we’ve had a few days to cool off, based on our forecast – we can anticipate the sizzle from the sun!
Although we in Calgary are always asking for the sun to beat down on us, sometimes the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. The scorching summer heat is hard on our bodies and moods but don’t let the temperature get you down! Here are a few easy tips to help keep your body and mind cool.
1. Drink More Water!
Most of the time, we aren’t getting in our daily H20 that is generally required. During the summer, people generally tend to sweat more from the heat and drinking enough water becomes that much more important. Although water isn’t your only choice –it’s free and easy to access! Learn to love the taste and your body will love you. You can also add in lemon or other fruits to help infuse your water with more flavors.
2. Sweat Less
Sweating isn’t fun especially when you haven’t caused any movement to break a sweat. A lot of the times, sweat inducing humidity is the worst part of the heat. You can control this by 1) again, drinking more water 2) applying antiperspirant at night so it works more effectively on your body and wearing breathable clothing such as cotton.
3. Freshen Up
Keep a spray bottle in the fridge and when you are really feeling hot, give yourself a spritz. The cool mist will help regulate the heat in your body. If you begin with your wrists, the temperature of your blood will also cool as it flows through your veins.
4) Sleep Tight
Make a cold compress and keep cool all night long. Fill a cotton sock with rice, tie the sock and freeze it a few hours before bedtime. Rice retains cold for a long period of time so you can slide this between your sheets and ensure the heat doesn’t escape in hopes for a bit of shut eye!
