I love fall. It is the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe and rediscover all the great things about fall: layering cute sweaters, boots, and deep rich colours. I recently re-discovered Marlborough mall! I grew up in the area and used to go to Marlborough when I was in school. My friends and I would spend hours, and hours shopping there after school.

As I got older, I took on more responsibilities and shopping took a back seat. Now that I am a mother of two and established in my business, I have more time and money to spend on myself. I took the opportunity of the seasons changing to add a few fall pieces to my wardrobe.

A Classic Coat

What is fall without a classic coat? I found this lovely blue coat at Fancy Label a modest clothing store in Marlborough. This new addition to the mall is well decorated and has excellent, quality clothing options. At first, I was nervous to go in because I was convinced that the store was just for Muslim women (they sell traditional Muslim garment). Their pieces are long but fitted and perfect for fall.

I picked up this royal blue coat with gold accents that was made in Turkey.

It buttons up all the way, but I opted to leave it open for most of the day to wear as a light coat. I received so many compliments on the coat.

Tips on Buying a Fall Coat

When you are looking for a fall coat I recommend looking for the following

  • Check for fit. Make sure that the shoulders of the jacket fall at the edge of your natural shoulder. Also, make sure that you can zip or button up the coat with ease.
  • Get the right length. If you are short, you may want to avoid super long coats that will look like they are swallowing you up. If you are taller, make sure that your coat's sleeves are the right length. You don't want cold wrists!
  • Choose a great color! Black is very heavy and, to be honest, boring. Try looking for a great red, hunter green, or if you have to, a grey. You will feel much better about going out when it is cloudy when you have some color.

Check out Fancy Label in Marlborough mall for many cute, reasonably priced items.

Fall Boots

Boots for fall are a must. My husband is 6'3 and I am constantly looking for shoes that will make me as tall as him. This is a near-impossible feat, as I am 5'7 and a half. When I spotted these crimson boots at MDX Footwear I knew I had to have them. With their lace-up detail and sky-high heel, I figured that I could look cute and give my husband a run for his money.

Don't be fooled: these shoes are extremely comfortable. These shoes have a hidden platform making them easy to walk in. I love the fact that these boots are over the knee and not black. They are fun and funky and I will get lots of wear out of them.

Think about it. These boots can be worn with a cute short skirt and leggings, pants, or with a sweater dress. The possibilities are endless.

Tips for Boot shopping

Look for the following when buying boots

  • Can you wear them with socks? If you try on your boots and they are tight, go a half size up. You have to be able to wear them with socks in the unpredictable Calgary weather.
  • Consider what else you can wear them with. Go through your wardrobe and make a mental list of all the things that would go great with your boots. If you can think of at least 4 outfits to wear them with, you have a winner!
  • Are they comfortable? You will likely be spending 5 hours or more in your fall boots. Make sure they are easy to walk in before you buy them.

Check out MDX Footwear for lots of great fall boots.

The best part about these finds is that they are both from locally owned businesses. These are people who live and work in Calgary and stand behind their product. Always support local where you can. It makes the city a better place!
